Mark Say's

I never thought that westlife would win record of the year three times.
My favourite moment was meeting the pope.
My favourite westlife track is can’t lose what I never had.
My favourite westlife video is world of our own.
The other guys are always asking where I am.
When I’m not working I like to write songs.
My motto is wake up and breathe.
I would describe myself as shy , reserved and friendly.
The phase I often use is “Well Bubbie - What’s Craic"

Mark On Westlife.

KIAN

Kian's very serious about the band - he'd lose a leg for it, I suspect! He can be very charming, especially when there are girls about! He loves being on stage and gets a huge buzz out of it! He's very dedicated, but he also knows how to gave a laugh.

NICKY

Nicky's the romantic one of us all. He was once away for Valentine's Day and he and his girlfriend Georgina were bitterly disappointed that they weren't going to see each other. He never said anything to her, but he flew back to Ireland and when she was in the shower he sneaked into her house and went up to her bedroom and filled it with balloons. So when she came back into the room all upset that she wasn't going to see her boyfriend, there he was lying on the bed with a box of chocolates! It's one of the most romantic things I've ever heard of and I've always wished the story was about me and that I'd done it for a girlfriend of mine. Nicky is quite sensible and mature normally, but he's definitely got a wild streak and he changes the most in drink. When he's got a few beers in him he gets very brave. He'll come up and give you a punch on the jaw just to be friendly. He thinks he's being playful but it really hurts. I think out of all of us Nicky was meant to be famous. He missed out on playing football for Leeds United because they dropped him when he was 16. He was destined to be a star.
Nicky has become much more laid back in the recent months. He used to worry about everything, but he's much more chilled now. And he's very stylish. He loves clothes, and, even if the rest of us look like we've been dragged backwards through a hedge, Nicky keeps it together.

SHANE

With Shane, his character very much depends on his mood. If he's in a good mood he can be absolutely hilarious, but if he's not he just doesn't want to know.

His biggest fault is that he's downright lazy. I was once at his house in Sligo and he had a video that was due back.The video store is 50 metres away, but he still got in his car and drove there.

It's the same with his mobile phone. If his phone is in his bag on the other side of the room, he'll ask to borrow my phone rather than bother to get up and fetch his bag.

But he's a very generous person and he's very fast to buy a round of drinks. If we go into a bar for just one drink, Shane will always be the one to pay. He's quite happy to spend his money. He's not as extravagant as Kian when it comes to shopping, but he does enjoy it and he gets quite choosy about the clothes he wears.

I'll always ask Shane for advice on anything because there's a mutual respect. He's helped me out a few times and we've got a lot of time for each other, especially when it comes to singing. Shane is so talented. I'm convinced music will always be part of his life. Shane can be very, very funny. And he can also be very, very inattentive. Sometimes it takes ages and hours to get his attention. If he's doing one thing, then that's the only thing he's going to do!

Westlife On Mark

KIAN

Mark is very funny - you can be in tears laughing at Mark if he’s in the right mood. But he likes to spend time on his own, chilling out in his room watching TV, or going for a long walk

NICKY

Mark is the deceptive one. When I first met him he wouldn’t say boo to a goose and he wouldn’t open his heart out for any of us, but when you get to know him you discover the boy is really mad!
Sometimes we have to do a day of solid interviews from nine in the morning to nine at the night and he’ll just get so fed up answering the same questions hour after hour that he starts making things up.
He doesn’t do it in England or Ireland because he’ll get found out, but when he’s in a foreign country it’s different. We all do it a bit but Mark is the worst. The code phrase is: "This one time in Cyprus...." and then he’ll start to tell this unbelievable story. None of us has ever been to Cyprus but he tells it like it’s really happened, we’re all in stitches and none of the interviewers can work out why.
Mark also lies about his age when he’s chatting up girls. He’s only 20 but sometimes in a club if he’s with a girl who’s a bit older, he’ll turn to me and say in Irish: "I’m 23 by the way". We always speak in Irish when we don’t want people to know what we’re saying!

SHANE

He’s very quiet, and can be very shy until you get to know him. He likes his privacy, but is a totally genuine guy - he sings all day. He’s got such a brilliant voice.

Christmas Profile 2005

My earliest Christmas memory…Every Christmas morning we used to go to my granny’s house and meet all my cousins and aunties and uncles and relations and everyone used to give each presents. It was always very exciting to see what all my cousins got from Santa Claus. Then the best thing is always the Christmas dinner!

My favourite Christmas ever…When I was still in school. I still enjoy Christmas but I think when you’re younger you get affected by the mood of Christmas a bit more. This is what Christmas means to me… People come home from college or abroad or wherever they’re working, and for at least two or three days everyone’s all together. It’s always a great time.

My plans for Christmas…I’m going to get away from everything, go home and totally relax.

My Christmas wishlist…Nothing material, I’m happy with everything I have. I just want to have a good time, simple as that! I want to enjoy being at home and the company of my friends and family.

My most memorable New Year…The last New Year that my granddad was alive and I was at my auntie’s house. It was the last year we all stayed in together, before the kids started going out to clubs and stuff. We basically had a really good laugh and I just remember him being there and being the centre of the party.

Mark In His Own Words

My Dream Home :
It would be close to Sligo, but right beside water, either a lake or the sea as I’d like a jet ski. I’d have a big party area with a bar and a snooker table. I’d have a massive TV and hundreds of computer games - I’ll be a kid all my life!

My Earliest Memory :
I remember being on a family holiday in Wales, when I was about three. I was left asleep in my cot ehile the adults went downstairs to have dinner in the hotel restaurant. But I woke up and climbed out of the cot - I was in panic, because I thought Mum and Dad had gone back to Ireland without me! I couldn’t reach the doorknob, so I got the wastepaper bin from the bathroom, emptied it on the floor and climbed up on it so I could open the door. My parents couldn’t believe it when I toddled into the restaurant on my own!

My First Kiss :
I was about twelve, and she was an exchange student I met at a house party organised by a fiend’s parents. The kiss was a serious shock for the first minute, but after a little while I began to enjoy it! I’ve never looked back since…

My Ideal Girl :
She would have to have a good sense of humour, as I’m always cracking jokes. Most of my jokes are sarcastic, so she’d have to be well able to answer back! I don’t like girls who are plastered in make-up - I like it if they look good in casual clothes, like a tracksuit. And I also like a girl who doesn’t get too intense about a relationship, after just a few weeks. But at the moment I’m just having a laugh. I like going to nightclubs and chatting up girls, and maybe have a dance and a smooch. Some people try too hard to find someone special, but I believe if it’s meant to happen to me, it will someday.

Marie Feehily On Mark's Success.

'It all seemed to happen overnight,' says Marie. 'In a way, the most exciting time was the first summer that the band were together, when they toured Ireland doing the Beat On The Street live shows, because it was all so new to us, We couldn't believe we were seeing our boys arriving on a stage as a professional band, with people cheering them. I remember going to see them play in Ballina in County Mayo, and Mark walked on the stage in a denim suit and a new hair cut, and I thought to myself, that's not the same lad I waved off from Sligo last week ! After that nothing was a shock !'

And even though the Feehily live outside the town, it doesn't stop the fans from amking the trip to see Mark's house - and some of them travel quite a distance! 'One night last winter, I left the house to put out some rubbish, and it was really pitch dark and creepy. Next thing , I heard some shouting, and I looked down the drive and there was two Australian fans waiting in the darkness. They were afraid to come up, because they spotted our black labrador, who probably looked even blacker and scarier in the winter night !'

Marie says all the family are 'delighted and proud' of Westlife's success : 'Even though he's always on the phone, I do miss Mark around the house. Growing up, he was always the life and soul of the place. running in and out doing things - except first thing in the morning of course!'

Mark Quotes

There is always music going on in my head. If I wasn’t listening to it, I was singing or writing songs.
I went to loads of shows, and I’d be wriggling in the seat, dying to hop up on the stage.

Meanwhile Jane seems to fall in love with Ricky Fitts, the strange boy next door, who is a drug dealer/documentarian and lives under a roof governed by a very strict marine father and a speechless mother. Thanks and Expressions of Gratitude

Most languages have an automatic response to thanks. The British do not automatically respond to thanks, but Americans do. A response is not necessary in British English, but is becoming more frequent. In the past, You’re welcome sounded very American. Nowadays it’s common in Britain too. Another common response in Britain is No problem (at all). Remember that Please is not an acceptable response to thanks in either Britain or the USA.

Thanking someone

* Thanks.
* Thank you.
* Thanks a lot.
* Thank you very much.
* Thank you very much indeed.
* It was very kind of you.
* I appreciate your help.
* You’ve been very helpful.

Thanking someone who tires to help

o Thanks anyway.
o Thank you for (looking).
o Thanks for (trying).
o It doesn’t matter. Thanks.
o Never mind. Thanks.

Responding to thanks

o You’re welcome. (US)
o Not at all. (formal, UK)
o Don’t mention it.
o (It’s) my pleasure.
o It was nothing.
o That’s alright/OK.
o No problem.
o Any time.
There are many ways of requesting permission in English. However, knowing when to use the right request formula or structure is a bit tricky. This can be determined by asking yourself these questions:

* Does the other person have higher status than you? (e.g. more authority or older)?
* Is the other person a stranger, an acquaintance, a colleague, a friend or a relative? (You don’t need polite formulas with people you know well – it sounds sarcastic.)

* Is your request going to cause the other person trouble or extra work?
* Is the other person in a good mood or a bad mood?

* …Could I use your phone?
* …Might I possibly use your phone?
* …Sorry to trouble you, but do you mind if I use your phone?
* …Would you mind if I used your phone?
* …May I use your phone?
* …Can I use your phone?
* …I wonder if I could use your phone.
